From Hakusan to the World: The JAPANTOGO Story
It started with a single machine
In the spring of 2019, in the quiet castle town of Hakusan in Ishikawa Prefecture, a small company opened its doors with a big question: why is it so hard for the rest of the world to enjoy the everyday magic of Japan?
JAPANTOGO LLC was founded by David Widjaja, an entrepreneur whose life had already crossed three continents, from Indonesia to the United States to Japan. After a decade in Japan’s vending machine industry, he knew something most people never think about: the humble vending machine standing on a snowy street corner in Hokuriku is one of the most reliable, most beautifully engineered machines ever built.
So we started with machines. Refurbished Fuji Electric vending machines, restored by hand in Japan and shipped to buyers in the USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, and beyond. Each unit is inspected, tested, and documented with English manuals, so an operator in New York or Kuala Lumpur can install it with confidence. When a machine we exported appeared in a cat cafe in New York, and when Popular Science called on us to explain the engineering behind Japan’s vending culture, it confirmed what we believed from day one: Japan’s best machines deserve a second life overseas.
Then came the sweets
But a machine is only as good as what’s inside it. And nothing fills a Japanese vending machine, or a Japanese heart, quite like confectionery.
From our home region of Hokuriku, we curate and export the sweets that locals actually eat: gold-leaf cakes from Kanazawa, blueberry baumkuchen from Noto, sweet potato treats from Gorojima, and beloved character snacks like Crayon Shinchan cookies. Every product we ship carries a piece of regional Japan that big exporters overlook. For our overseas customers, opening a box from JAPANTOGO is like stepping into a neighborhood shop in Ishikawa, where the shopkeeper knows which wagashi is in season.
Our two divisions grew together naturally. The same care that restores a Fuji Electric machine to factory spec goes into selecting sweets that survive the journey and arrive tasting like they came from the shop shelf that morning.
And because family means everyone
Japan makes some of the finest pet care products in the world, and few brands are as trusted as Doggyman H.A. So when our customers, many of them pet lovers, asked us to bring Japanese-quality pet supplies to their countries, we said yes. Today we export genuine Doggyman products: grooming tools, care accessories, and everyday essentials that reflect the same Japanese standard of craftsmanship that runs through everything we do, from machines to mochi.
One philosophy, three journeys
A rebuilt Fuji Electric machine humming in a Texas cat cafe. A box of Noto blueberry baumkuchen unboxed in Jakarta. A Doggyman brush in a home in Singapore. Different products, one promise: the real Japan, delivered with care.
We are a small company by choice. That means the founder still inspects machines himself, still answers customer emails himself, and still personally selects the sweets that go into each shipment. It also means every customer, from a first-time buyer ordering one box of cookies to a business importing twenty machines, gets the same thing: honest advice, careful handling, and support long after the delivery arrives.
From Hakusan City in Ishikawa to your street, your shop, or your living room. That’s JAPANTOGO.
